Every Sailors worst nightmare is to have a hole in his/her boat, especially one that the bilge pumps can’t keep up with. Friends encountered just such a nightmare at this weekends HEINEKEN Sailing Regatta in St Maarten / St Martin, SXM, Caribbean.
Imagine going out for a fun day as crew on a friends boat, only to come home that night and find an unexpected wind shift in the anchorage has put your boat up on a shallow reef and punctured the hull… that’s exactly what happened to these friends, and we spent the day today alongside everyone else working to salvage their floating home. These are good people, and avid sailors of over 30 years, and this boat was their dream as they just started out on their new voyage onboard. Very sad day.
